Anti-ECFA protest

The Anti-ECFA protest (626反ECFA遊行) occurred on June 26, 2010 in Taipei, Taiwan to oppose the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) between the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China.

Protest

Tens of thousands of people protested against the signing of the ECFA which boost two-way trade organized by the Democratic Progressive Party.[1] A spokesman for the DPP said the trade deal with China will damage the local economy and undermine Taiwan's sovereignty as he was against the One China market concept.[2] President Ma Ying-jeou have responded that the signing would not lead to a One China market.[3]

Many protesters fear the agreement will eventually lead Taiwan to Chinese reunification with Beijing.[4] The protest originally estimated a turnout of 100,000 people.[5] The DPP said 100,000 took part in the protest, while the police said there were 32,000 people.[1] The crowd began on the streets at 3pm and dismissed by 7pm.[2]
